How to get yourself to study? What to do to finally start coming to class on time? Where are all the ardor and interest in learning? Why homework is not more than a formality? Is not a questions of «losers» and «loser». These are questions with which stalkivayutsya all. The main thing in them is not what they do, but how we react and respond to them. This is what determines our success or failure.

Our life experiences, how emotional UPS and downs. Sometimes we see in training definitely clear a little later — do not see anything in addition to simply the time spent. No one disputes, it’s easy to learn when you have the desire and enthusiasm, but what to do when such and not close?

In this article we will look at some guiding questions and practical tips designed to how to help themselves clarify their motivational attitudes and to cope with periods of seeming futility or apathy to learning.

Why do you need English?

This is the first of what we need to think about. Despite its, at first glance, the banality, the issue is extremely important. It is the basis for further «construction» of the educational process. Reading any other paragraphs of this article will be useless if we have no clear goal in learning a foreign language. So before you approach the other aspects of the arguments, take time, think about the questions below, look inside yourself and try to give yourself an honest answer to each of them.

  • What it means to me knowing this foreign language?
  • What I want to achieve?
  • As knowledge of this language will help me to reach my primary or greater (assumes more than the English) goal?

These questions are useful at the beginning of the study and its process. It is important to understand that learning should not be an end in itself: it is a way. The study should have a clear and justified reason, as well as a clearly defined contour, i.e. the border. We can’t learn «just in case», «future» or «for all». The desire to learn is very closely related to the emotional side of our personality. Emotions, as we know, are volatile, so rely on them in training is not necessary. Here, the decisive role should be played by the mind, i.e. our conscious choice. Our solution must have a very strong rational basis, being able to withstand our sometimes lazy or apathetic, nature. Understanding learning objectives, in this case, can play an important role. The importance of the goal is proportional to the level of motivation in learning. The greater the importance, the more motivation.

If we learn only because it wants someone else (parents, boss, friend, business partner), maybe we will be very difficult to motivate yourself if the «other» lost that desire. If we learn because all it is «fashionable», then we need not to move away from these «motivators», as without them, progress for us is very doubtful.

Only the motivation that comes from within, from our personal desires and preferences can really be the answer. Be honest to yourself. What has English to the realization of my main objective? Direct or indirect? If the latter, then isn’t there another way to achieve the goal? In other words, how well must I speak English in order to get closer to what for me is the meaning of life? Is it enough for me a simple introduction to the basics of the language, as my main interest lies outside the study area, or do I want to devote the rest of his life linguistics and grammar of the English language?

Perhaps the answer is more than obvious, we still need to read it for yourself, or even record. I, like anyone else, should know that without English I can’t reach your goals. So, determine the purpose, name it (i.e., verbalize), write and remember. It is a small proposal that you have got will be the basis and driving force in your training.

Once we determine how English will help you in achieving our main goal, we should move on to another, equally important question: within what time I need to master the language to the desired level?

Be realistic. If you start training from scratch, it is not necessary to tune in to a large success in a short time, and to think that in six months you will be free to talk to passers-by in the British town Millstreet. Language fluency is not expected until three years General training (including 4 hours of classroom instruction per week). Big goals are not achieved with little effort. Edward Andersen, suggested that those students who achieve great results, to set big goals and those who set themselves small goals, respectively, came in lower results. After a little research he found quite the opposite information. It turned out that most of those who have not achieved great success in their studies, set themselves a great purpose, those who were successful, I set goals that were a little more of their capabilities. Sometimes we want everything at once, or nothing at all. The second is to achieve a very simple, first we can’t see … «his head without a mirror». There must be verbaten some balance.

Goals should not be small, otherwise we will not be motivated enough. They also should not be too large, so we knew we COULD achieve, and thus, again, was motivated.

To maintain the proper level of motivation you need to keep the learning process «under control». Part of the problem is usually solved by the teacher. The whole course is divided into several stages. The whole program divided into 6 levels. Of course, nobody studies at all levels at once. After determining our knowledge and enroll in the course we start to work with a certain material, the program, which is also divided into a number of topics (from 10 to 18 units). So our big task is divided into a number of small. Our attention must be directed to the implementation of these «small» tasks in the set time frame. Not to think «pass the whole level in three months,» but to perform a little homework with clear understanding and confident mastery of the material.

For us it is also important to monitor their attention during work. We need to learn how to work and not work because we have to or we so decided. Do not assume that passive movement to the learning process will provide us with a brilliant command of the language. Set specific goals and deadlines for their implementation. Know your pace. If you are reading a normal page of simple text (about 2,000 characters) for 20 minutes. Define them for yourself and finish your reading no later than 20 minutes. In the same way with learning new words. If you know what you can learn 20 words in 10 minutes, keep up your pace.

Break up complex tasks into several simple. Focus on one task at one time. Most of us, single function. Therefore, for greater efficiency of time spent on training, it is not necessary to turn on the TV, loud music, talking with friends, draw, play computer games, etc. This will keep from scattering your attention and will give confidence after the successful completion of the task.

Do not skip classes. The more you miss, the more you fall behind. And you feel it. When you ask the lesson question and you cannot answer it, you are having negative feelings. Of course, we can not help, even on unconscious level, tend to avoid such feelings and look for a pretext not to go to class. In this lies a great danger, because if we do not Wake up, to school then to come there will be no point. Come to lessons anyway! Even if you make mistakes and don’t understand things, you’re in the classroom, not in order to Shine their knowledge. You’re in the classroom, to make mistakes and correct them. If you have not done your homework, you still need to come to class. Come to class, you put yourself in a positive learning environment that will contribute to your progress.

Try to do the task moderately difficult. If the homework for you was simple, first, tell your teacher, and secondly, apply the creative approach, consider how you could apply the received knowledge in life. Have to agree, in both cases, if the task is too easy or too difficult, we will likely feel motivation. Training should be a little heavy, but still possible to succeed.

Next, know your deadlines. We all «only» 168 hours in a week, no matter who we are, what we possess or what we do. We need to know what and how much time we can devote. Therefore, to accurately determine when and how much you will study the subject. I know all this reasoning with all the rules already naveivaet boredom, not to mention trying to make it happen. This particularly applies to creative individuals. Of course, we need to leave time for vacation, emergency situations, some nezaplanirovanno or spontaneity. Life must have its paint. However, if you put any sequence in General, we can be the «empty trough», and blame the teacher for what he/she was(a) quite severe(a) or yourself that you weren’t well organized.

Know what time of day the training more effective. If the item is given to you with difficulty, do not postpone the self-study at the end of the day when you have nothing to be able to understand, too tired and you have nothing I want, not to mention the language. Make your first more complex and less job, and then reward yourself that you like (ice cream, watching a good movie, etc.). Learn how to break complex topics into a series of simple. Start working with more complex tasks, then go to the lungs.

Classes in the class come prepared. Sometimes you have to switch from the native language into a foreign language. Run ahead and read the textbook material that you want to pass the class. Try to get at least a General idea about the topic, think about what words, phrases or entire sections you will not understand, focus your attention on them, think about how you asked a question or participated in the conversation.

Management will help us to keep your training under control, to achieve specific objectives within a given time, and thus to see his gradual and deliberate success, that, as bread, it is important to support their motivation.

An important role in learning motivation plays the rest. Unfortunately, no man is an inexhaustible source of energy. That is why most people work only one-third of the day. While resting two days a week and has one month per year on vacation. Even the biblical God after all six days of his work in the seventh «he rested». Although the human brain works without a break until his death, we need to give him breaks.

Somehow, one of the polyglots of the past, who knew eight languages, said that never worked for more than 15 minutes. A break for 3-5 minutes every 20-30 minutes will help keep our minds fresh and sharp for 4-5 hours. While we don’t have to be much to distract from work. Of course, it is impossible here to identify any pattern or formula. Each will work their own method. For some, the interruptions can be moments while others minutes. Most importantly, we need to know what is more suited to us and apply it.

It is important to remember that the main purpose of vacation is to relax. Sometimes we can achieve a degree of relaxation, doing something abstract. We can make a tea or do a light workout. As you know, for the efficient operation of the brain requires lot of oxygen-rich blood. Some scientists say a few simple exercise will increase the amount of oxygen supply to the brain by 20 percent. Maybe for some it will be enough just to look away from the text, to pay attention to the environment, to pay attention to what happens behind the window on the street, etc.

For some of us it can serve as a big help the use of «stopping the internal dialogue». For anybody not a secret that within our consciousness is constantly going on internal dialogue. It’s like communicating with yourself. We tell ourselves what to do. Sometimes we justify ourselves or condemn. Sometimes we’re trying to understand something. So, the purpose of this practice is to stop this internal dialogue. How to do it? Very simple — stop talking. Sitting there at the table, lean back in his chair, eyes closed, we will try anything not to think. It will be easier to do if we focus our attention on some part of his body or some abstract object at all. For example, our attention fixed on our hands, will help without much meditation to stop our inner dialogue.

Do not relax, do cleaning, including the TV, or doing anything else that could occupy our brains work. Productive leisure is conducive to productive work. In other words, works well, the only one who has well a rest.

Fatigue is the worst enemy of motivation. Therefore, work and rest should be well balanced, and match the level of our health and the degree necessary for us travelers.

Be aware of how you learn

In order to be motivated, most of us, at least from time to time, need to experience success. That is to see that our efforts are for the benefit of and be generously rewarded. However, in order to learn successfully we need to understand how we learn. Often, it is necessary to allocate time to determine how we better perceive information (aurally, visually, to solve specific tasks, etc.); how we remember new information (via repetition, impression, Association, networking, note-taking, grouping data, etc); what time of day most favorable for training (morning, afternoon, evening, night); if we are learning better when we are discussing new material with someone, or when we study it by yourself; do we need a «deadlines» or we’re all doing at the time; etc.

These are issues on which the success of the training. We need to determine how we learn and how we learn best. And based on the data obtained to develop their personal learning skills, namely, those that will work for you. Make this a habit. Learn effectively in a short time. You are guaranteed success, and motivation, respectively.

Avoid blind memorization. Understand and look for meaning. Whether we like it or not, but our brain tries to understand new information and to establish meaningful communication with what we already know. In other words, the brain identificeret, evaluates and «enter» the new material, the relevant section of «database» of our memory. Unconscious repetition and rote learning are not only able to quench in us the motivation, and finally to instill an aversion to learning. Therefore, always try to take into account a larger context, consider your topics. Learn new words in a thematic bundle, but also in the context of the proposals. When considering the material, try to find the meaning. To see the logical sequence and characteristic of the rule of laws. Focus on the Essentials, and do not pay much attention to minor details. Reading the text, try to follow the main idea. Even if some words are not clear to you, try to determine the possible meaning of the word based on the context of the passage. Check, did you lay out the big picture. Do you see the private within the context of a larger. If you find it difficult themselves to cope with this task independently, then use the help of others, especially your teacher.

So, understand the material. Even if you understand the information not really, since it is necessary to understand still looking for the meaning and give their understanding any material. There is no point in no point in its implementation.

Ask yourself, how I impact evaluation? What grades do motivate me to study? If you like to get only the «5 key» (and tell everyone about it), get them. If you find «5-ka» — more proof that you do not have much to learn as easily get high marks — go to a higher group and receive «3-key». For some, only «2» can be a real motivator. Only then, some of us begin to take on school, because otherwise «kicked out».

So know your rating. Try to give yourself an honest evaluation of their knowledge. This rating has real meaning. Teacher assessments (if any) are conditional. Each group has its own «start». Someone already has some knowledge of the language, someone they did not. Someone studying the language easier, it is also given to the much more complicated. Therefore, we must know how well we did the job.

Reward yourself. Mark your achievements. Buy yourself an ice cream! It will once again confirm and strengthen within you the understanding that you can and most importantly will warm the desire to continue learning.

In conclusion, I want to note some summarizing tips. The first, «appetite comes during a meal». Sometimes, we just need to start working. At the same time say to yourself: «I love to learn!» or «I like this subject!» If you have no desire to learn, pretend you are. Imagine that you’ve been waiting for this moment. Were preparing for it. And here it came … you yourself are learning English! Often it is triggered. Second, in any case, not doing the work according to the principle «the sooner, the better» or «will do». Try to understand the essence. Understand. Own. Improvise. And finally, apply. The third, and final, if there is no desire to learn — you learn really. The real learning, as the struggle is only on the battlefield. Easy to learn when you have the impulse, desire and enthusiasm. Harder when there’s nothing else like it and you reach the goal you set for yourself, regardless of the circumstances.
